Out of One’s Comfort Zone

My sons and I watched High School Musical on Sunday and it led to an interesting conversation. Zachary was asking why the characters Sharpary and Ryan as well as Chad were reacting so negatively to the “confessions” of their fellow classmates. Their friends were revealing hidden talents that proved to be shocking and caused a an uproar. Thier friends went so far as to tell them, to forget thier outside interests and to “stick to what you koow”. In other words,be safe, stay with the familiar, don’t do anything different.
I explained to Zachary that sometimes people don’t want to leave the security to the familiar because they know what to expect, there are no surprises, everything is on an even keel. Most of us like routine and most like to be prepared for whatever comes up that’s new. Chaos has no place in our lives. Of course that kinda happens in the movie until the kids learn that it’s okay to like more than one thing, to befriend someone outside of your coveted circle of buddies, because in the end, we are all the same, and quite frankly we do share some of the same likes and dislikes. And to me, that is a comfort zone, don’t you think?
